Well, by now Donald Trump is probably signing his big beautiful bill into law. If there is any upside to this moment, it is that as we watch all of these Republicans stand around cheering about their victory, we now have clarity about what we are dealing with. There is no more sugar coating it, no more making excuses for it. The cruelty is the point, and now we must accept it. The struggle we are about to face is going to be very difficult; and the challenges are exacerbated by the fact that we are tired and broken. And, don't let anyone tell you that we have experienced this before. We are in a completely new territory, this enemy is acting brand new. This does not mean that we cannot draw inspiration from past battles for social justice, it just means that we may have to get creative with our tactics. One thing that may be different this time is that we are going to have to fight together. This battle is going to bring together some strange bedfellows and if we are successful we will bring about a new dawn for our country. During COVID we learned mutual aid, we kept each other alive by giving to food banks, sharing information, and leaning on each other. Sometimes you will be the help someone needs and sometimes you will be the one who needs help, so don't forget to call someone and to reach out when you need help. I don't have the answers but I believe in God and I put my faith in God. And, nothing will shake that. The only other thing that's real for me in this moment is that I now have a young person in my life - who proudly proclaims that she is four years old whenever we have a conversation - and because someone fought for me, I know that I don't have the right to give up now.
So, onward! Let's do this!
